Please read this before using the Gulf Plants Index data, photos, or any application built on them.
In plain language
This is a reference dataset, not professional advice. We've done our best to make it accurate, but you are responsible for what you do with it.
What this dataset is
The Gulf Plants Index is a database of 143 plant species relevant to landscaping in Bahrain and the wider Arabian Gulf region. It was built by extracting information from a single Bahraini horticultural reference document, supplementing it with photographs from public sources, and adding general care information (water needs, sun exposure, heat tolerance, blooming season, regional suitability).
What this dataset is not
- Not professional horticultural advice. Care values like "low water" or "full sun" are general guidance based on plant category and known characteristics — not site-specific recommendations from a qualified landscaper or agronomist.
- Not a guarantee of plant identification. Photos and botanical names are based on the source document and community-verified observations from iNaturalist. Misidentifications happen, especially for closely related species, hybrids, and cultivars.
- Not medical, veterinary, or food-safety information. Some plants in this dataset are toxic to humans, pets, or livestock if eaten or touched. We provide a
toxicity_levelfield with confidence-flagged values for plants where toxicity is well-documented, but the majority of plants are markedunknownbecause we have not verified them against authoritative clinical sources. Treat the absence of a toxicity warning as "we don't know," not "it's safe." Always verify with a poison control resource before assuming any plant is safe to handle, eat, or have around children and animals. - Not legal advice on import, cultivation, or trade. Some plants are invasive species, regulated for import, or restricted in certain countries. We do not track this. Check with your local agricultural authority before planting, importing, or transporting any plant material.
- Not a substitute for current local conditions. Soil quality, water salinity, microclimate, urban heat-island effects, and seasonal weather variation all matter and are not in this dataset.
How accurate is the care information?
We are honest about this: the care fields (water_requirement, sunlight_needs, heat_tolerance, blooming_season, suitable_for_countries) are populated from three sources, which we mark for every cell in a *_source column:
pdf_extracted— derived from the original Bahraini reference document. Reliable within the limits of that source.inferred— based on well-established horticultural knowledge of the specific species (e.g., desert acacias being drought-tolerant). Reasonably reliable for the listed species.category_default— assigned because the plant belongs to a category with a typical profile (e.g., cacti are typically low-water). These are general estimates, not species-specific facts. A given plant may differ significantly from its category default.unknown— left blank when no reliable default exists.
The majority of care-data cells are currently category_default. Treat them as starting points for further research, not authoritative care instructions.
Photo sourcing
- 397 photos were extracted from the original source document and are used under the assumption of fair use for reference purposes within the original publication's scope. Anyone redistributing this dataset should verify the rights status of those images.
- 26 photos were sourced from iNaturalist under the CC-BY or CC0 (public domain) license. These photos require attribution per the license terms — see
ATTRIBUTIONS.md. The photographers granted CC-BY permission for their photos but did not endorse this dataset, this product, or any application built on it.
Regional applicability
The suitable_for_countries field includes all six GCC countries (Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman) for every plant in the index. This is based on broad coastal-Gulf climate similarity. It does not account for sub-national variation — inland Saudi Arabia, mountainous Oman (Dhofar, Hajar), and other inland or elevated areas have meaningfully different climates from coastal Bahrain. A plant marked suitable for "SA" may not thrive in Riyadh or Asir.
Use at your own risk
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law:
- The Gulf Plants Index, its data, photographs, and any application or service built on it are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied.
- We make no warranty as to the accuracy, completeness, currency, or fitness for any particular purpose of the information provided.
- We are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, this dataset or any product built on it. This includes (but is not limited to) plant losses, financial losses, harm to people or animals, harm to property, or harm to the environment.
- You agree to use this information at your own risk and to verify any details that matter to your situation before acting on them.
When to seek qualified advice
You should consult a qualified professional for any of the following:
- Commercial landscaping or agricultural projects — site-specific design and species selection by a licensed landscape architect or agronomist.
- Plant toxicity concerns — poison control, a veterinarian, or a medical professional, depending on the situation.
- Import, export, or restricted-species questions — your country's agricultural ministry or customs authority.
- Allergies or sensitivities — a medical professional, before introducing unfamiliar plants to your environment.
Reporting errors
If you find a factual error in the dataset (wrong identification, incorrect care value, broken photo, missing attribution), please report it. We treat correction reports as priority work.
This disclaimer applies to the Gulf Plants Index dataset and any derived products. It does not override any conflicting terms in licenses applying to specific photographs (see ATTRIBUTIONS.md).

نحن صريحون بشأن هذه النقطة: حقول العناية (water_requirement، sunlight_needs، heat_tolerance، blooming_season، suitable_for_countries) معبّأة من ثلاثة مصادر، ونوضّح المصدر لكل خلية في عمود *_source:
ATTRIBUTIONS.md.
1. "As is" / "as available" → ترجمتها إلى "كما هو" و"كما هو متاح" بين علامات اقتباس.
2. "Express or implied warranty" →
5. "To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law" →
6. "GCC countries" →
